Spherical roller bearings are the most commonly used bearing type in the main shaft arrangement of wind turbines. These self-aligning bearings have excellent performance characteristics in terms of load carrying capacity and reliability, which can make them meet the service life requirements of more than 25 years. When checking the special operating conditions of the wind turbine main shaft, it is obvious that this application does not require the same bearing speed, load and temperature parameters as other large industrial machinery. For example, they may require speeds of up to 600 r/min and peak temperatures of up to 200°C, but they are usually not affected by changes in wind direction and high thrust loads.
